World Criterium Championships logoSo it’s official. After several furtive attempts over the years to hold a race during Interbike, we will finally get to see some first-class racing on one evening of the show (Thursday, to be exact). It should be a great party and chance to hang with our industry brothers and sisters for an evening and watch some serious racing.

The race, called the World Criterium Championship, will be the final race in the USA Crits series promoted by Swagger, LLC. Other races in the Series include the Athens Twilight and Tour of Somerville – two classics on the US race calendar for many, many years. We’re really excited to be presenting sponsors of another great race put on by the guys at Swagger.

Speaking of being excited, I think one of the coolest parts of that evening’s events will be the “Industry Cup” race. This will take place be between the pro women’s and pro men’s races and will pit teams from Interbike exhibiting companies against each other. Should be some fun and friendly competition – nobody would take this race too seriously, now, would they? Imagine Team Shimano vs Team SRAM. Or Team Pedro’s vs Team Park Tool. Look vs Time… The opportunities for friendly competition, rivalry and bragging rights are endless… All in the name of good fun and bike industry camaraderie, of course.

And think of some of the ex-pro’s that now work in the industry. There could be some very fast teams out there. A couple of names that come to mind are Wayne Stetina of Shimano and Karen Bliss of Fuji. Who else is out there? And there is definitely no shortage of fast amateurs working throughout the industry.

Here’s the link to the official press release.

More info to come as it become available…

DUDE! You KNOW that ALL of my training is going towards this race now. Seriously… I want this more than a medal at Masters Track Nationals. I am going to start motorpacing NOW!

It’ll be a slaughter house! Stetina is gonna light it up- you just know it. But don’t forget Marc Gullickson is now at Hutchinson, Norco (in Canada) has guys like Scott Goguen and there are many, many more.

As for the actual WCC- the Masi-sponsored A&F/ Inferno team contains Athens winner Mark Hekman. Mark not only won Athens, but the Southeast Crit series overall title and is currently leading the National crit series. The team is going to be at WCC with a power-packed team… trust me.

All I can say is that as long as I can finish on the same lap as Stetina, I’m going for the win! (I smell a bunch of riders suddenly coming out of retirement!)

Tim, I had suspicion that you’d be into this…

Oh yeah… I’m bringing the heat. Carbon race wheels, long sleeve skinsuit, shoe covers… all the speed weaponry I can find (no doping though… sorry to disappoint anybody).

I’m back in the gym and riding hard intervals. Only a few months to train!

Well cool. Or rather, hot. I like that Industry Cup idea — looking forward to seeing Tim and others race in this.

At around 7:15-7:30, after the Pro Women’s race and before the industry cup there will be a ceremonial parade lap consisting of riders from the Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride. These riders were seriously wounded in Iraq and are now taking part in our adaptive cycling program. Please come out and cheer on these heroes. Earlier on Thursday at 4:00 pm at Interbike Booth 6383 we’re having a media event/meet and greet. If you are at the show please come by. Bob Roll will be our special guest.
